A rare moment of sceptical debunking at WorldNetDaily:
Editor’s note: The story in this column about Times Square Church making thousands of sandwiches just prior to 9/11 is false. Janet Porter confirmed the story with a church staff member as she wrote the column, but was given incorrect information. WorldNetDaily regrets the error.
Here’s the tale as Folger told it:
In the fall of 2001, Pastor David Wilkerson, of Times Square Church in New York City, was warned by God that a calamity was coming. For six weeks they felt an intense burden and enormous heaviness…For six weeks, there wasn’t a sermon. Instead, there was intercession for our nation with weeping and repentance.
…Then Wilkerson felt God telling him something that seemed rather bizarre. He felt God telling him to make sandwiches – lots of sandwiches. What were they for? Who would eat them? That part wasn’t clear, but his church did what they believed God was telling them anyway.
And on the 10th of September they stayed up all night making hundreds and hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. By morning they had about 2,000 sandwiches. At 8:46 a.m. the first plane hit the World Trade Center and Times Square Church was ready to feed and minister to rescue workers and victims of our nation’s worst attack.
Maybe the clue was God saying on 10 September “make some sandwiches” as opposed to saying “call the cops and have them arrest a bunch of Islamic fanatics at such-and-such an address before they kill thousands of people”.
As I blogged on Sunday, Wilkerson recently announced that God had warned him of an “earth-shattering calamity” about to occur as a result of God’s wrath against secularism, and he has advised people to stockpile food as riots engulf the world.
His claim to some kind of pre-9/11 intimation was made shortly after the terrorist attacks, in a sermon called “The Towers Have Fallen And We Missed The Message“:
…Times Square Church was warned a calamity was coming. We are now in the seventh week of a visitation of the Holy Spirit and if you have been coming to this church you know that even weeks before that the Holy Spirit moved on the pastoral staff here to cancel everything.
We cancelled the Mission’s Conference, we cancelled the Youth Conventions, and we cancelled every speaker. We cancelled everything to come and call this body to prayer. We started with two weeks of prayer and those weeks of meetings continue this week again. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and stopping only when God says to stop.
But something indescribable has been happening in this church in this past seven weeks. Every service, as you witness today, a holy hush, a silence from the throne has come to this auditorium. There was one night when we sat for one hour in total silence and nobody could move. I remember putting my hands on my knees to stop them from trembling because of the awesome pres ence of God.
As the pastors began to pray and you remember if you’ve been here, you’ve seen the pastors weeping and wailing. I’ve seen pastor Neil laying here crying out to God. We were repenting. We were crying out to God and then the Holy Spirit spoke clearly that it was happening because a tragedy was coming, a calamity was coming to this city and to the nation and we didn’t know what it was. Suddenly a calamity struck the nation and especially here in New York City.

[…] Didn’t Tell Pastor to Make Peanut Butter Sandwiches A rare admission from WorldNetDaily: […]
Wilkerson used to be kinda one of my heroes back in the day. It’s kind of a shock to discover that he’s just another loopy-toon, and maybe even a scammer. (Actually no, not so much of a shock, I guess.)
‘Maybe the clue was God saying on 10 September ”make some sandwiches” as opposed to…’
Genuine LOL here.
:o)
O.K., so where’s the verification that the Wilkerson account is false? Has anyone or anything so concretely established the error here? What irresponsible words some people spit out. The Bible states clearly that prophecy is to be a functioning element in the body of Christ. When one approaches an occasion (such as the one aforementioned) with the presupposition of cessation of the active voice of God in the Church he has undercut Biblical doctrine.
Why would God tell Wilkerson to have the police arrest a bunch of Moslems when the attack would be carried out by members of the US government? Is God such a schizo that He knows in advance the lies that Bush will tell, yet doesn’t know that they’re lies?
How about God telling Wilkerson to announce on September 10th that the “anonymous” short sales of airline stocks that are about to make the news are in fact not anonymous, as no stock trade can be, and that the money can be traced to the Carlysle Foundation, owned by the Bush family, the Windsor family, and the Bin Laden family? Might that have been a good strategy for God?
Or maybe have Wilkerson call the gas station across from the Pentagon and warn them to save a copy of the film from their camera so that we could see exactly what hit the Pentagon? That would have been truly prophetic, wouldn’t it?
Hey, how about having Wilerson call the DA and have him pick up the Dancing Israelis so that they’d be in a local jail where Chertoff couldn’t order their release, and we could find out how they knew to be set up and filming in that particular spot at that particular time?
Oh, and how about having Wilkerson remind the DA that perserving the crime scene for forensic analysis is his responsibility, not having an Israeli company scoop out all the debris and ship it to China within a couple weeks? Would that have been the act of a caring God?
Or are you just someone who sucks at the tit of the propaganda ministry, who wouldn’t know truth if it bit him on the ass?
Why would he tell him to arrest a bunch of muslims? Evil-doers will get the wrath of God. But he also comes with mercy. We are all sinners…we all deserve Hell and the wrath of God. And why does God have to use a certain Strategy to satisfy human standards? How can the clay say to the potter “Your wrong”?
[…] answer is “no”, and for once we actually find WND debunking a story (a rare but not unprecdented occurrence). Aaron Klein explains: The story spread virally through the evangelical Christian […]
Haiti !!!!
I have been expecting this for months … from geologic study,
most of the damage incurred from bad building structures,
I turned the Television on the time of the Twin Towers
I never do that in the day except at weekend sport.
I was stunned.
I wrote to Portillo Abbott and Neil re: Afghanistan severe operation after This Week
on low casualties from a mass effort
This morning I read, only Jeremiah 18, where God says Am I placing evil in your way ?, you harm yourselves, but I can deflect that idea to harm others,
the potter and the clay re: the nation,
then at 18.00 on the News I hear of Operation Moshtarak
I never thought that this would so big, nor so soon, to bring a strength to Peace.
And a success at date.
So I believe and I can give hundreds of such references in personal life,
I knew I should be up Mendip 12 Sept 1970 as a routine as the course people shut it early so people could return to their jobs for urgent work,
but I was obstructed in this,
the one storm we needed data for happened that day
and the chart needed to be set free of clock jam (again) on one weir.
However we did not return Friday as somebody did not wish to go back into the office to enjoy Friday afternoon in peace,
we ended up annoying that person’s cousin and being lost in a rain storm for ages getting in the way of child’s birthday preparations on Saturday, I spent until 9pm dusk when I could not see the ground researching a mountainous hilltop for what data I could retrieve on the down side of the hydrograph.
People do not listen to ordinary events
they tear around missing Life
I cannot persuade my own relatives that God intends life to be straightforward and within our capacity !!
So you may not agree
but it has and does happen.
We just know at times …

Okay, but didn’t happen any way. He felt the leading of God and they ministered to people with those sandwiches. So what’s false about it?
We dont have all the answers, and Some things happen in a twisted sick workd. Botton line the world is the way it is becase man has turn their backs on God. People want to put doubt and be SO SCEPTICAL. Why not be happy that the church showed love to thousands of men and women. Its the church thats tring to make the world a better place. Instead being sceptical we need be thankful for the ministry making the food and sending time playing . If God put it on his heart before or after, praise God he carried out the vision to feed the workers.may God be with all the sarcasm for a man of God following his heart.
