Christian protesters have gathered outside a school which recently scrapped Easter celebrations in order to ‘respect diverse religious beliefs’.
The faithful gathered outside Norwood Primary School in Eastleigh, Hampshire with banners reading ‘Headteacher Stephanie Mander wants to cancel Easter – let’s cancel her!’ after the announcement.
…The group of Christian protesters from the Living Word Church, based in Fareham, Hampshire, held England flags with the words ‘Jesus: the way the truth the life’ and ‘Jesus is kin’ [sic – should be “Jesus is King”] printed on them outside the school.
Reverend Chris Wickland said the protest was against the school cancelling the Easter service and what he called the exclusion of Christianity in schools.
Nick Tenconi, the leader of UKIP, attended the Christians’ protest as a member of the Disciples of Christ…
The Mail write-up, like a live blog published by the Southern Daily Echo, downplays the protest’s personalised and literally demonising attacks on the headteacher, expressed by posters produced by the Disciples of Christ in which her face was disfigured with Satanic horns or by the word “JUDAS” superimposed across her forehead (see below).
The protest went ahead despite the school responding to complaints about its decision. As described by BBC News:
The school has said the changes were made in consultation with parents and that Easter would still be celebrated at the school with various activities and events.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the school said: “To be clear, we are marking Easter in school and as with other religious festivals, children continue to learn about and celebrate Easter both educationally in our RE lessons and in our assemblies across the whole half term.”
They said the school, which has no religious affiliations, had decided not to visit the local church and instead celebrate the holiday “where all children are able to take part and benefit”.
“Changes were made in consultation with our parent forum, and we have received many positive messages regarding these,” the spokesperson added.
The Mail Online refers to the Disciples of Christ as “a protestant denomination popular in the United States”, but this is obviously confused: the phrase “Disciples of Christ” is fairly generic as a Christian formulation, and there is no connection with the American group. The UK Disciples of Christ first appeared in London last year, and Tenconi’s invariable presence indicates an overlap with UKIP. The phrase “Jesus is King” is also associated with the group, and one of their banners with the same slogan appeared on-stage at a Tommy Robinson rally last summer (the variant “Christ is King” has also become a regular chant at such rallies). Wickland attended one such pro-Robinson rally in London last autumn.
Wickland wore black clerical garb and a white clerical collar at the protest, but although in some contexts he describes himself as “Rev. Chris Wickland”, in others his preferred ministerial title is “Pastor Chris Wickland”. He has provided his backstory in a video available on YouTube – by his own account, he was formerly an occultist and Rosicrucian (“the worst kind of Freemasonry”) and had numerous encounters with the demonic. However, after converting to Christianity he was recognised by other Christians as a “prophet to the nations” in the “end times”, and he claims to have received visions of disasters that have then come to pass (in particular, he cites an eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia). As well as heading a network of two churches, he is a senior pastor at the Gravesend-based LCBN UK television network.

I think by law Christianity is to be taught in our schools, though pupils can have opt-out from such lessons; and one other religion too. Usually the other religion depends on the area – Mohammedan, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and so on. The trouble is that some years have to do all of the religions in a kind of general sweep and this causes muddle in the minds of children: they can confuse Moses with Mohammed or a Mosque with a Hindu temple! That in some countries, and even here, may cause a riot. We do not always foresee the outcome of our choices.
As a Christian of the soggy liberal kind, I would like to affirm “NOT IN MY NAME”
I am a born again Christian made of metal, hopefully, but faith cannot be forced: it can only be presented. We must allow everyone to put forward their case, but acknowledge that the roots of our English nation are Christian, or at least have been since the time of the Celtic missionaries in the 7th century and Augustine of Rome.
David, I agree with you. These are nuts of the worst kind !! Completely bigoted and quite worryingly offensive. Any belief structure is personal, not a nut-show to be used to target and impose on just ordinary folk doing an educational job.
They have a viewpoint which they should express but that does not make them bigoted just because you do not agree with it. Tolerance means allowing someone to say what they think especially when you do not agree with it. I am not sure that I agree with it, or the reasons for it, but they must be allowed to have their say. This is what England is about.
Rev West, what churches should be more concerned about, is the horrific number of church baby abductions for torture. Until these disgusting religious bigots become honest, and admit their institutional crimes, instead of imposing their structures, is first clean up their ‘religions’. I know, because I was a victim of the Church of England , snatched from my real mother, Joan Edmiston, me given to a psychotic being experimentally sterilised to see if that quote “balanced psychosis” and I was sex abused, and violently tortured. There has been an international criminal investigation into my cases, procuring 14,000 documents of evidenced, covered up in the U.K. with considerable evidential lying. Mine is just one case. There are hundreds of thousands of similar cases. Religious infrastructures are dangerous, we don’t need polluting.
Rev West, I sometimes hear the statement “We are a christian country” Really ?? “This is what England is” you say. I haven’t found any bible that says ‘Thou shalt rob babies and screw them and attack them with knives and beat them into silence’ Have you? Religion is a personal choice, not to be targeted by religious infrastructures that are utterly corrupt. There should be no infrastructural religions insulting teachers, depicting them with horns etc. What is ‘demonic’ is some of these insane churches.
We live in a fallen world where nothing is perfect, including the Church; but that does not mean that in some sense and to some degree, we live in a Christian country built and influenced by Christian ideas and ideals, in some cases secularised and in some cases not. Take for example the common law definition of wedlock, which is distinctly Christian, or our view on human or natural rights – rights given us by God in nature (as it ought to be, rather than as it is) and as we try to uphold them in our legal system.
Dear Rev West, “U.K. Legal system” ?? Where ?? Doesn’t exist. Over our international criminal investigations 2002 to 2025, 20.5 million child abuse victims, 98% covered up by police, writing child torture is not a crime, baby trafficking by councils is “Legal – “No crime to record” 21,000 “no justice despair suicides rising” and are you aware that the U.K. did not even ratify the CRC-OP-SC – Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children child prostitution and child pornography until 20th February 2009 ? There are a number of U.N. Conventions the U.K. has not signed at all. Upto 6 year delays on U.K. court process, leaving many victims giving up. Hm. I think not. The biggest danger is the U.K. is failing its Rome Treaty obligations on U.K. torture and sex abuse of children, criminally violating Art. 54(1) on prompt and effective investigations, which U.K. police and authorities universally block, and lie to not proceed, so failing I.C.C. “Complementarity”. I emphasise, ‘religion’ – belief, is a personal choice, it does not need a Church of England ancient philosophy violating children’s rights, and why defer to an external structure, that is not clean, with all that “forgiveness” rubbish, a vicar to me “best forgotten, eh” that changes nothing in law, when 5 years of Group trauma Psychotherapy, properly run, allows you to “know” yourself, rightfully angry, and believe in yourself . That is why I am a Prosecution Lawyer. The last thing the Psychotherapist said to me when the Group ended in 1990, was “Lindsay, give ’em hell” !!! Hhaha!! That is what I am doing.
