United Jewish Communities Repudiates Brigitte Gabriel

From the JTA:

The United Jewish Communities condemned a speaker who told a Florida Jewish federation that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is an anti-Semite.

…”Barack Obama is an anti-Semite,” said [Brigitte] Gabriel, who founded the nonprofit organization American Congress for Truth following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. “No Jews should support him. Jews should vote for Hillary Clinton.”

…The local federation disassociated itself from Gabriel’s comments. The UJC, the national arm of the federations, went further.

UJC President Howard Rieger told JTA that his organization “condemned such expressions in the strongest possible manner.”

Gabriel, a US-Lebanese, has made a career out of absurdly inflammatory and hate-mongering rhetoric, which she serves up for eager readers of websites like Frontpage. Here’s her most famous rumination, delivered at the 2007 CUFI (Christians United for Israel) conference, hosted by “New World Order” conspiracy-theorist Pastor John Hagee:

The difference, my friends, between Israel and the Arab world is the difference between civilization and barbarism. It’s the difference between good and evil [applause] …this is what we’re witnessing in the Arabic world, They have no SOUL !, they are dead set on killing and destruction. And in the name of something they call “Allah” which is very different from the God we believe [applause] …because our God is the God of love.

(Gabriel has also been credited by some sites with originating the content of the notorious “Can a good Muslim be a good American?” email chain message, although I haven’t been able to track down an authoritative source.)

Back in October Gabriel was in London, where she attended a charity reception hosted by Lady Jakobovits. Jakobovits, the elderly widow of a former UK Chief Rabbi, appeared with her in a photograph which was published in the Jewish Chronicle. Doubtless Gabriel gained credibility from the association, but it must surely be to the detriment of the person shown standing next to her. However, it seems that at least one Jewish group has now wised up to what she stands for, and has made an appropriate response.

  1. brigitte gabriel is a hero for the jewish people and the west. she survived living directly under “palestinian” jihadist oppression and murder.

although her comment on obama was not proper; there is grave cause for concern re obama’s assoicates and statements: his pastor awarded america’s most famous anti semite a lifetime achievement award. his foreign policy advisors (malley, brezinski)hate israel; his funder george soros funds anti israel groups. obama said the “inflexible jews” are hindering the mideast peace process. he said “nobody has suffered as much as the palestinians”.

what has he done for the jewish people? look at ms. gabriel: she dedicates her life to helping the jews, israel and the west triumph over the very real threat of jihadist islam.

she is a hero in the best sense of the word. she calls to moderate moslems to stand up for the truth, but they don’t.

  2. On June 13, 2007 during a question and answer period following Gabriel’s talk given at the US Joint Command Staff College in Norfolk, VA, Brigitte Gabriel stated that if the US is art war with a Muslim nation American-muslim politicians cannot be trusted. Here is Gabriel’s statement:

“If a Muslim who is a practicing Muslim who believes the word of the Koran to be the word of Allah, who abides by Islam, who goes to mosque and prays every Friday, who prays five times a day – this practicing Muslim, who believes in the teachings of the Koran, cannot be a loyal citizen to the United States of America.

When push comes to shove, if we are faced with war, that Muslim’s loyalty will always be to Islam and not to a foreign government. . .

…in a time of war, when Muslims are fighting non-Muslims, non-Muslims cannot turn their back to any elected Muslims official in the White House, and this is why my personal opinion, as someone who comes from the Middle East, I echo the voices of millions of people who fled the Middle East because of Islamic persecution, you cannot trust having a Muslim in office. When he has to make a decision to either be loyal to the United States or be loyal to Islam. “

Video segments containing Gabriel’s speech and the ensuing Q & A period can be found on YouTube with a search on the term “Brigitte Gabriel”.

Gabriel also has appeared at Christian Zionist “prophecy” conflicts dedicated to details surrounded the purportedly immanent “End Times” during which, most Christian Zionists believe, Jews in Israel will have to convert to Christian or else die and in which, as a typical figure, it is expected that 2/3 of Israeli Jews will be killed.

As such, it can be argued that Brigitte Gabriel’s implicit support for Christian Zionist end-times prophecy is far from “friendly” to Jews or Israel, and some call Christian Zionism anti-Semitic or anti-Jewish. I prefer the term “structural anti-Semitism” as a way of describing the complex but not necessarily favorable attitude of Christian Zionists towards Jews.

As far as Brigitte Gabriel’s alleged “heroism”, I would submit that her rhetoric has a great deal in common with the anti-Japanese rhetoric, following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, that led to a climate of demonization in which it was seen as “reasonable” to force loyal Japanese-American citizens, mostly on the US West Coast, into concentration camps. Often, these victims of what has come to be viewed, in retrospect, as an unfounded national hysteria, lost their homes and businesses. There was little that was “heroic” about rhetoric that stoked the anti-Japanese hatreds of the period which led to stripping 100,000 or more Americans of their civil rights and I see, likewise, little that is “heroic” in the sort of rhetoric, from Brigitte Gabriel, that I showcase above.
