Christian Zionist Org vs Islamic Center of Murfreesboro

From Talking Points:

The lawsuit to stop the construction of a mosque in middle Tennessee is getting expensive.

Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, a Christian Zionist group, hired and is paying the fees for one of the two lawyers on the case.

The lawsuit alleges that officials in Rutherford County violated its open meeting laws when approving an expansion of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. The plaintiffs, however, have spent much of their time in court arguing that Islam is not a religion.

…The group, which is based in Tennessee, is run by Laurie Cardoza-Moore. Cardoza-Moore believes, among other things, that nearly all Muslims — including those in middle Tennessee — follow a strict interpretation of the Koran: beating their wives, marrying children and killing dishonorable family members.

…If Cardoza-Moore seems familiar, that might be because she appeared in a “Daily Show” segment about the proposed mosque in August. She was also in the news earlier this year after Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) spoke at a PJTN event, and Cardoza-Moore — in violation of IRS regulations about nonprofits — encouraged members to donate money to the congresswoman’s campaign.

Cardoza-Moore also gave a speech at the anti-mosque rally in New York on 22 August (the one that took place the week before Pamela Geller’s effort, and which Geller initially condemned as “half-assed”): she denounced Muslims as “slave traders” who were America’s “first enemy”, claimed that Park51 would contain a portrait of Osama bin Laden overlooking the site of Ground Zero (although she acknowledged the existence of “many peaceful” Muslims in the USA), and called for Nancy Pelosi to be investigated. She believes tha the planned mosque expansion in Murfreesboro is a plot to destroy the Bible belt; as she told CBN’s “Terrorism Analyst” Erick Stakelbeck in August:

“You have Bible book publishers, you have Christian book publishers, you have Christian music headquartered here,” she said. “So this is where the Gospel message goes out. And the radical Islamic extremists have stated that they’re still fighting the Crusaders–and they see this as the capital of the Crusaders.”

According to a bio:

Laurie Cardoza-Moore is president of Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, Inc. Laurie is an accomplished lobbyist who actively supports Israel and lobbied to pass HJR 960 Resolution to support The State of Israel in the Tennessee General Assembly in 2002.  She has been responsible for bringing numerous Israeli Dignitaries to Nashville and in educating communities at many churches, synagogues, and universities in dozens of  communities. The Center For Jewish Awareness in Nashville, Tennessee, awarded Laurie the Friend of Israel Award in May of 2004, for her steadfast support of the state of Israel and the Jewish community in Nashville. Laurie works actively with the Israeli Consul General to the Southeast, to strengthen relationships between the church communities and The State of Israel.  Former Consul General Shmuel ben Shmuel awarded Laurie with The Goodwill Ambassador to Israel Award in October 2005. As a veteran co-producer and on-screen talent, she has added her talents to over 500 film and video productions.

Her view of Christianity includes not just support for Israel, but an emphasis on “Hebrew Roots”, which means that Christian expression ought to adopt Jewish cultural forms and idioms (I blogged on this trend here). In 2007, it seems that she had some association with Yair Davidy of “Brit-Am“.

In 2008, Cardoza-Moore’s filmmaker husband, Stan Moore (he runs MP Films), directed a documentary called The Forgotten People: Christianity and the Holocaust, co-produced with a Messianic Jewish believer named Yochanan Ben Yehuda (of Heart for Israel Ministries and Galilee of the Nations); according to a 2009 report from Bob Smietana and Kate Howard in the Tennessean:

Much of the film focuses on radical Islam — interposing pictures of Holocaust victims and Nazis with images of marching, shouting, angry Muslims.

Scenes from the movie are being aired weekly on WHTN, a local Christian television station, and the entire film will be shown to the National Religious Broadcasters Association in Nashville in February. Cardoza-Moore hopes to take it on a 13-city nationwide tour.

…Doris Kosmin, the wife of Rabbi Kliel Rose of West End Synagogue, heard about the film when it was advertised in local Jewish circles. After seeing it, she was stunned.

“I thought it was an abuse of the memory of the Holocaust, and a manipulation of Holocaust survivors,” she said. “I don’t think that survivors should be used that way.”

Kosmin worries about Islamic extremism but said the film demonized all Muslims. “I don’t think there was any distinction between Islamicists and moderate Muslims,” she said.

The Rev. Maury Davis of Cornerstone Church in Madison hosted a viewing of the movie at his church, and warned his Assembly of God congregation about radical Muslims in a recent sermon called “Islam: the Evil Religion.”

On an old version of the her site on Wayback, she suggested that such documentaries were needed to counter films being funded by George Soros. The same version also shows that in 2006 PJTN brought Walid Shoebat (blogged by me a number of times) and Brigitte Gabriel (who was repudiated by the United Jewish Communities in 2008) to Nashville, “to speak to our community about why these terrorist organizations exist and their ultimate goal.”

However, PJTN is not just a one-woman band; the “Program and Development Director” is Rev Sam Clarke, a local Episcopalian priest who also serves as the Director of the Christian Friends of Yad Vashem; he and his wife have a website here. According to his profile Clarke was inspired by the books of Corrie ten Boom:

Sam came to faith in Jesus Christ through the ministry of Corrie ten Boom… In 2007  he received a call to establish and become the first director of a Christian office at Yad Vashem (the Jewish Holocaust Center in Jerusalem). The establishment of this office represents a breakthrough in Jewish – Christian relations. It  was a joint project between Yad Vashem and the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem. Sam spent 14 months with Yad Vashem before returning to the U.S. to begin Gateway to Israel Ministries with his wife, Marianne.

In May of 2010, Sam became the Program and Development Director for Proclaiming Justice to the Nations (PJTN.org).

The David Horowitz Mutual Appreciation Weekend

News from the David Horowitz Freedom Center:

The David Horowitz Freedom Center will be holding its Restoration Weekend November 18 – 21, 2010 at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. Prominent authorities and political figures will enlighten audiences at this important annual event.

Among those “enlightening” the audience will be Pastor John Hagee, who is known for teaching about how the “part-Jewish” anti-Christ will use Islam to form the Illuminati’s One World Government in accordance with his understanding of the Book of Revelation. But perhaps it’s unfair to single him out; he’ll be a in diverse company of pundits and politicians. Some names below are more famous than others:

Newt Gingrich, David Horowitz, Liz Cheney, Ann Coulter, Andrew Klavan, Robert Spencer, Frank Gaffney, Monica Crowley, John Yoo, Marc Thiessen, Michael Barone, Ralph Peters, Caroline Glick, Pastor John Hagee, Rob Pollock, Fred Barnes, Senator Jeff Sessions, Congressmen Ed Royce and Steven King, Emmett Tyrrell, Bill Gertz, Doug Schoen, Ron Radosh, Steven Moore, Arizona State Senators Russell Pearce and Thayer Verschoor, Mark Krikorian, S.E. Cupp, Lee Smith, General Paul Vallely, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Fred Barnes and Pat Caddell.

Not sure why Fred Barnes is listed twice. It’ll be a busy weekend for Spencer, who’ll also be heading off to Fort Hood in Texas on 21 November to a memorial event with Walid Shoebat and Michael Riker.

Apparently, the highlight of the weekend will be… an award ceremony for Pamela Geller, supposedly for “courage”. Geller tells us that former recipients have included

Oriana Fallaci… legend Rush Limbaugh, author Ann Coulter, former Attorney General John Ashcroft, civil rights leader Ward Connerly, human rights activist Armando Vallederes, Georgia Democrat Senator Zell Miller, film director Cyrus Nowrasteh, Swift Boat veteran John O’Neill, Iranian dissident Amir Abbas Fakhravar, activist Phyllis Schlafly, et al….

More on GCIS Weirdness

Yesterday I wrote a blog entry which discussed the  International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association, which is sponsoring a self-described “competing” Fort Hood memorial event, on 21 November. The event is being organised by Walid Shoebat – who goes around churches preaching that the Bible predicts a “Muslim anti-Christ” and that Obama is a Muslim – and speakers include the anti-Islam activist Robert Spencer and Gen William Boykin, who teaches that the USA is in religious war against Islam. The ICTOA’s sponsorship was noted just recently by WorldNetDaily, and the ICTOA’s director Michael Riker is apparently “conducting interviews on this topic” alongside Shoebat’s handler Keith Davies. [UPDATE: A new press release adds:

“This unofficial Ft Hood Memorial Event will deal with issues of terror that have been swept under the carpet. In the last several years political correctness is destroying law enforcement’s ability to defend the citizens of America as evidenced by the tragedy of the Ft Hood massacre. You will also hear experts outline how law enforcement is hampered in their ability to do their jobs properly, to protect the public and our military.” says Mike Riker…]

So, as I do, I decided to look into who exactly Riker is and what exactly the ICTOA do. I previously noted that in October it had held an anti-terror conference involving the likes of Ilana Freedman, Steve Emerson, Shoebat, Aaron Richman, and Ben Venzke; in 2009, speakers had included Jarret Brachman.

Riker is a retired police officer, and he apparently works closely with a organisation calling itself “Griffith Colson Intelligence Service”; he has contributed to its websites and reportedly has had long discussions over the phone on security matters with W. Edward Griffith, who until recently was in charge of GCIS. However, there was something weird about the GCIS: there is strange a web of self-referencing on-line newspapers and magazines, until recently published by Griffith but since sold off, containing very little original (if any) material besides information about GCIS and its associates.

The only “outsider” to have taken an interest was a certain “Shabbir Azim”, about whom there is very little on-line. However, according to one a report supposedly from “IslamicWorldJournal” (but now deleted):

A private spy chief is out of a job following revelations that he once worked as a transvestite prostitute and particpated in countless gay sex parties during his term as head of his agency.

Griffith, who is a known transvestite, was the subject of a major media assault when Islamic activist Shabbir Azim launched a campaign to out Griffith sexcapades and history of prostitution.

By coincidence, IslamicWorldJournal was published on tumblr – as were some sites controlled by Griffith. Sites controlled by Griffith are also the only other source for details about the sex scandal (which he has admitted occured before he came “to know God”).

Further mention of Azim comes from Griffith’s Bramford Times:

The conflict started Sunday morning, after Griffith had delivered a radio broadcast the night before in remembrance of 911… His speech was aggressive, clearly defining Islamic extremism as “the most violent enemy in our nation’s history”. Sunday morning Azim said he would launch a Facebook and twitter protest against Griffith’s radio address and likened the 43-year old GCIS chief to Hitler and Hussein. Describing himself as an “activist”, Azim went a step further and had posted a comment on Facebook that vowed to attack the online network of GCIS.

…Monday morning began with a compiled report on Azim’s posts and a summary was sent to Facebook corporate headquarters. A request to have Azim’s profile removed went unacknowledged. As they waited, Cohen and her team, under orders from the Director, began launching what was billed as a series of “cyber security exercises”… At 3:45 Wednesday morning  Director W. Edward Griffith gave the order and Cohen’s team brought Azim’s Facebook profile down.

Around the same time, Azim also posted a one-off message to a conspiracy theory forum:

Questions surround a new security start-up that is building on plans to create a massive private intelligence network to aid government intelligence agencies, says a source who believes the project is more than meets the eye.

Securitas Global Group (SGG) is a super secret international corporate octopus, founded in 2010 by entrepreneurs and assembled from a variety of different businesses. Some have even gone as far as to say the firm is really a ‘Shadow Government’ and is at the beckon call of intelligence agencies. The goal of SGG is to create the largest private intelligence outfit in the world (and some say beyond, with plans to take intelligence communications to space). “The posts held by SGG officers are cryptic. they are part of a complex international intelligence and communications web (an interconnected control system) which links Tri-lateralist plans, the Council on Foreign relations, the Illuminati and other interlocking groups”, says once source who wishes to remain anonymous.

Financed by private money from Max Baumann, SGG is a privately held company with an undergound corporate headquarters located somewhere in Virginia. The mandate if SGG, says our source, is the disruption of Islam and the growth of Islam in the United States. They are crusaders for the war on terror and are strong supporters of Bush/Cheney. The center of SGG operations, says the source, is unknown. Some believe the company operates from Israel, while other believe Washington D.C. or London is the central headquarters.

GCIS describes itself as a “division” of SGG.

Yesterday, I received two interesting comments to my blog. At 8.36pm one came from Azim, whose fluency in English has strangely deteroriated:

I pleased for you that you stand with the Ummah. They close my website these people

Ten minutes later, a certain “Jason Kline” commented:

Your sympathies for Muslims and left-wingers says all that needs to be said. It is clear you report from the surface and don’t care about the work being done. It is a shame when you can’t be fair because of your lack of a lass. Your little bio says volumes about what motivates you. I thought I would enjoy your take on the events of the day. You clearly lack balance in your blogging.

Perhaps readers will not overly be surprised to learn that “Kline”‘s email address in fact resolves on Facebook to Max Baumann. And perhaps readers will not be stunned and amazed by the remarkable coincidence that Kline and Azim have exactly the same IP address: 173.72.229.37.

I sense a recurring theme here somewhere…

The International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association and GCIS: More “Private Intelligence” Weirdness

News 8 in Austin has picked up on the planned “competing” Fort Hood Memorial Service:

An event organized by the Pennsylvania-based group Forum for Middle East Understanding is set to take place Nov. 21 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

Speakers at the event include two former terrorists and the director of “Jihad Watch,” a blog dedicated to educating others about the theology motivating jihadists.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, or SPJST, has been working with the City of Killeen to build a Living Memorial Garden by the Killeen Civic and Conference Center, the same location as the Forum for Middle East Understanding event.

The connection caused confusion in the community about whether or not the Killeen Chamber of Commerce was supporting the function.

The chamber sent a letter to its members clearly stating the event was not backed by the city of Killeen, Fort Hood or SPJST.

I blogged on the background to this self-proclaimed “competing” event here – the FMEU exists to promote Walid Shoebat, and it’s clear that the planned event is will be politically-charged: Shoebat’s son is billing it with the tag-line “America had enough of diversity, liberalism, appeasement, and silence”.

Shoebat’s handler, Keith Davies (wrongly named “Robert Davies” in the report – perhaps a conflation with Robert Spencer, who will be speaking), has complained bitterly that the Chamber of Commerce is being “politically correct”, although the Chamber’s letter, as reproduced by News 8, seems reasonable enough:

You should also know that we have learned that an organization by the name of the Forum for Middle East Understanding has reserved the Killeen Civic and Conference Center for an event to occur on Nov. 21, 2010.

It has been reported to us that this group is soliciting area businesses to make financial contributions to support their event, which is being billed as a ‘Fort Hood Memorial Event.’

You should know that neither this organization or this event is supported by Fort Hood or the City of Killeen or SPJST.

Also sponsoring the FMEU event is the International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association, and Davies’ press release on the subject tells us that

Conducting interviews on this topic are Keith Davies, executive director of The Forum for Middle East Understanding, and Michael Riker, president of the International Counter Terrorism Association and retired detective of Prince Georges County Police Dept. in Maryland.

As I noted previously, the ICTOA held a conference last month that included Shoebat (presumably not talking about his “Muslim anti-Christ” theory) and Steve Emerson; but alongside the usual anti-Islam pundits there are various self-styled “private security and intelligence” types. I’ve looked into this world a couple of times before (see here): its most distinctive feature is absurd websites that look as though they were designed ten years ago by someone who’s watched too many James Bond films. An interview with Riker appears on the website of a strange magazine called ArtChix Magazine; here, he gives details of previous conferences:

The [2009] conference was held in Orlando, Florida and was attended by approximately 200 first responders. The conference lasted three days and some of the topics included, Understanding Shariah Law and Militant Ideology, Domestic Terrorism, Militant Islamist Signs and Indicators, Al Qaeda’s Military Strategies and The Legal and Policy Decisions of the Obama Administration in the War on Terror, to name just a few. The attendees came from all over the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Denmark… I have worked the last two conferences with Dr. Jarret Brachman. Dr. Brachman is a leading specialist who knows the workings of Al Qaeda. I met Dr. Brachman when he was the Director of Research at West Points Combating Terrorism Center. His knowledge of Al Qaeda is even known to Osama Bin Laden, as he was mentioned in a video tape that was released to the media from Osama Bin Laden. He has been invited to testify on security related matters before the House Armed Services Committee and the British House of Lords and his research has been featured on 60 Minutes, CNN, the New York Times, Al-Jazeera among a number of other international media outlets. Dr. Brachman’s book, Global Jihadism: Theory and Practice, was published in August 2008…

ArtChix Magazine seems a rather unlikely source for the interview, but the magazine was until recently part of the Griffith Media Center. Until last month, this was run by W. Edwin Griffith (or “Will Griffith”), who is also behind the “Griffith Colson Intelligence Service” and who is himself an ICTOA member. Riker recently made a posting to the GCIS’s “Emergency and Disaster Situation Room“; according to the site’s blurb,

The GCIS Situation Room is operated by the GCIS COMMUNICATIONS COMMAND CENTER. The GCIS Situation Room is the official operational hub for F.R.A.N.C. (Field Response And Network Command) of Griffith Colson Intelligence Service and is integrated into the F.R.A.N.C. System.

The “Situation Room” appears in fact to be a blog, decorated with flashing “Warning signs”, overblown logos, and a lurid red-font-on-black-background theme. For October, we read

ICTOA COUNTERTERRORISM ALERT: Iran Admits It Could Pull Nuke Trigger on US, Israel

ISSUED TO THE GCIS COMMUNICATIONS COMMAND CENTER BY PRESIDENT MICHAEL RIKER OF THE INTERNATIONAL COUNTER-TERRORISM OFFICIERS ASSOCIATION

Riker’s “alert”, which he has been good enough to “issue”, is in fact a piece of punditry pasted from Newsmax. Griffith and Riker appear to be close allies; back in August there was a breathless press release:

W. Edward Griffith, Director of Griffith Colson Intelligence Service (GCIS) activated his agency’s Situation Room to monitor what appears to be a military strike against the Iranian regime, which he believes could come within days.

A spokeswoman for GCIS said the Director consulted with President Michael Riker of the International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association earlier in the morning and conducted a series of telephone conferences concerning the possibility of Israeli strikes against Iran.

Director Griffith spoke at length with ICTOA President Michael Riker this morning and studied his morning intelligence briefings on the possible strike by Israel against Iran said Sara Bauer, Press Secretary at the agency, The Director has ordered all GCIS personnel in Los Angeles and Washington on alert to monitor this potential crisis.

…Bauer added that the 43-year old private intelligence chief also ordered the GCIS Israeli security unit, Machaseh Security Service (MSS) on full alert, provide the Director with updated status reports on these developments. MSS Chief Kayla Cohen will be in direct contact with Griffith during the course of the monitoring procedure.

The main GCIS website has various divisions, including – curiously – a “Space Security Center” and a “Welsh Security Branch” (includes embedded Charlotte Church pop video). In September, Griffith also broadcast a hilariously pompous “9/11 Address To The Nation” (“broadcast live at NAIStv, official online television channel of the National Association of Investigative Specialists”), in which he mentioned Riker and railed against “elites” and the “enemy within” – named as “ultra-liberals” and “diversity”. He also alluded to a personal scandal from before he came “to know God”; this was reportedly a past role as a transvestite prostitute, although, bizarrely, the only details about this are on sites listed as having belonged to “the Griffith Corporation” but recently sold the “Harcourt Media Group” (run by a certain “Madison Harcourt”). These sites – including ArtChix – are described as “media assets”, but judging from the Griffith Media Center they appear to have been created mainly to puff Griffith’s various projects; it’s not at all clear whether they have any off-line existence, and there is no advertising.

Oversight for the GCIS comes from its “Executive Security Council”, which includes Ralph D. Thomas, who has also written articles for ArtChix (“Director of The National Association Of Investigative Specialists” – blog here) Gary Aminoff (“President of the San Fernando Valley Republican Club and First Vice Chairman of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County” – blog here) and Donald Leake (“Greater Love Outreach”, apparently – erm – a gospel music quartet). GCIS is also described as a “division” of the Securitas Global Group (SGG), run by a certain Max Baumann.

Nadine Dorries Sends “Warning” to Tim Ireland over Charity Query

Following Nadine Dorries’ recent House of Commons adjournment debate on abortion, there has been a certain amount of interest in “Forsaken: Taunton”, a supposedly “neutral” charity which offers post-abortion counselling to women and which was cited Dorries in her speech. Forsaken is less than transparent: its template “About Us” page is mostly marked “TBA”. I did some Googling around yesterday and found a link to a local Charismatic church involved in pro-life activism, but I was also also keen to stress that the people behind it appear to be sensitive and compassionate.

However, questions have also arisen about the group’s status as a charity, as it describes itself on the site and as Dorries introduced it in the House of Commons. In the UK, the word “charity” is suggestive of what Americans call a “501(c)” – an organisation that has to work within certain guidelines and be open to public scrutiny. That popular understanding is not quite correct, apparently; according to the Charity Commission:

???????A small charitable organisation with an income that does not exceed £5000 can enjoy the benefits of charitable status without having to meet the regulatory requirements of registered charities.

The bar was raised from £1000 in 2007, and Forsaken has responded to queries by explaining that this is why it does not appear on the register. So,  a reasonable query, and a reasonable explanation.

Nadine Dorries, however, is currently attempting to dampen down any further interest by playing her ever-favourite “stalker” card, in a remarkable posted headlined “Tim Ireland, You Have Been Warned“:

…The sharks are already circling.

…Already, Forsaken have had the infamous Bloggerheads, Tim Ireland, on the phone this morning. Probing, asking questions about their status, amking the usual inappropriate comments etc. Usual Tim Ireland, agressive ‘I have a right to know all about you’ style.

I am an elected member Tim. You harass me on an almost daily basis, including my staff and my Chairman. I am expected, even though you aren’t one of my constituents, to take it. I am expected to tolerate your inappropriate level of intense attention, as were the MPs you harassed before me.

Members of the public are not.

If you put into place your usual method of operation of continuous telephone calls, blogging, blitz emailing thousands of ranting words etc to people going about their daily business, I am sure the Police may take a strong view.

You have been warned. I will not tolerate anyone else being subjected to your intense, inappropriate, abusive behaviour, simply because they have some, even the most distant, association to me.

However, as Tim explains on his blog today:

I contacted Forsaken (by email only) to make enquiries about their status as a charity, and included a follow up question about how long they’d been operating under the income threshold that stops them from having to register as one. I have now dared to send a third email asking them to confirm that I have not called them, and I will let you know if they get back to me.

As Tim also notes, her complaint that she is “expected to tolerate your inappropriate level of intense attention” reveals a lot about her supposed complaints to the police. It seems likely that some months ago she did ask for some informal and general advice about stalkers, which she then deliberately misrepresented on her “70 per cent fiction” blog and to the press as specific advice given to her about Tim.

Despite her claim that Tim is under investigation, he has never been contacted by the police, and she has been unable to provide the reference numbers which anyone who makes a formal complaint to the police are given. One excuse she has given – after a lot of pushing – is that the “House of Commons Police” do not give reference numbers, and from a recent Tweet here we can infer that she has tried to get a backdated number from the police in her constituency. I am inclined to think that this attempt failed, and that whoever she spoke to informed her that she is indeed “expected to tolerate” public interest in her public activities.

Given that Tim has – now by her own admission – done nothing that she is not “expected to tolerate”, she has no business continuing to pretend that she regards him as some sort of threat to her person (an unconvincing charade anyway). And attempting to use or manipulate “Forsaken” to continue her smear campaign by proxy is probably something the organisation could have done without.

If anyone is interested in what actual stalking looks like, a comment I received last night from an anonymous coward here may be a good example.

Forsaken, Alternatives, and Living Light: Opposition to Abortion in Taunton

Christian Concern for Our Nation reports:

On 2 November 2010 an adjournment debate was held in the House of Commons regarding the need for women to be given more information prior to an abortion. The debate was called for by Nadine Dorries MP who highlighted the urgent need for women to be given all of the information they needed prior to a potential abortion, including information related to its risks, and the other options that may be available to pregnant women…

Dorries is particularly close to CCFON; prior to the election, CCFON members registered and created her campaign website. Dorries has spoken on the subject of abortion previously, and is known for promoting the “hand of hope” urban legend. CCFON, meanwhile, has links with the US Alliance Defense Fund and with the anti-gay New Generation churches, and it is not inaccurate to describe it as a Christian Right organisation.

In her Commons speech, Dorries made the claim that women are pushed into abortions by counsellors and providers who wish to make money. Further:

…During the debate Nadine mentioned a book called ‘Forsaken – Women from Taunton Talk About Abortion’. The book is published by the charity Forsaken, and contains harrowing stories of women suffering from post-abortion syndrome. It was written by Angela Coakes and her friends who have been working with women with post-abortion syndrome in Taunton [in southwest England].

Forsaken has a website here; details of those involved are scarce, although alongside Angela Coakes a certain Philip Coakes has responded to queries. “Phil and Angie Coakes” are listed as homegroup leaders at Living Light Christian Church in Taunton, and the church has founded a local pregnancy centre called Alternatives; a link to this centre is given on the Forsaken website. Neither site has any reference to the church, and it takes a purely secular approach to the subject.

An mp3 sermon on the “Alternatives Pregnancy Centre Vision”, given by Elder John Lalgee at Living Light in 2007, can be heard here; he comes across as thoughtful and sensitive, and he specifically warns against hostility towards women who have had abortions. He is also keen that professionals should understand that

we’re not radical lunatics… who are not going to speak sense and wisdom and care objectively to the women.

Living Light Taunton belongs to a wider group of churches in the UK and the USA; according to the website, Lalgee, who is from Blackpool,

…oversees the congregations in Kenosha, Racine and Pleasant Prairie as well as, Living Light Church in Taunton, and Covenant Life Church in Lake City, Michigan. All of this work is carried out as part of One Church Ministries, which John leads.

The church in Taunton is led by Ben Thorne, in whose name the Alternatives website is registered. Although the churches are Charismatic, the style seems far closer to mainstream British evangelicalism than to the US “Christian Right”.

Walid Shoebat and Robert Spencer to Hold “Competing” Fort Hood Memorial

“America had enough of diversity, liberalism, appeasement, and silence”

As the anniversary of the Fort Hood massacre approaches, time for some acrimony; Walid Shoebat’s website reports:

Killeen Chamber of Commerce Playing Politics in the memory of Ft Hood dead and wounded

Nov. 21st, ICTOA and a private organization have scheduled a competing memorial service to honor the dead and wounded of Ft Hood, followed by five speakers who will expose what our nation’s leaders are afraid to share with the American people.

The Killeen, TX Chamber of Commerce has issued a letter to its members stating that they are supporting the Nov 5th, and are not supporting Nov 21st event. They have also insinuated that there is a money issue, and that Forum For Middle East Understanding has been “pressuring local businesses” to sponsor the Nov. 21st event. They have also stated to members that our event is being misrepresented as a memorial service.

“Why is the Chamber of Commerce of Killeen even taking sides one way or the other?” says Keith Davies the executive director of the Forum For Middle East Understanding, who organized the event. “I would not expect the support of the Chamber of Commerce nor would I expect their animosity.”

…We have not been in communication with the Chamber of Commerce and wonder why they have so much animosity to this second event? The answer is most likely the ongoing issue of political correctness, the very reason why the Ft Hood tragedy happened, and the root cause of similar incidents, because of our unwillingness to properly address the issues of terrorism.

…The theme of this memorial event is DIVERSITY STARTS WITH THE TRUTH…

I blogged on Shoebat’s Forum For Middle East Understanding here. Unfortunately, the Killeen Chamber of Commerce letter does not appear to be available on-line, but the idea that they are the ones “playing politics” is laughable considering how the 21 November event is being billed; according to Shoebat’s son Theodore, on a posting to YouTube:

Reclaiming America at Fort Hood. America had enough of diversity, liberalism, appeasement, and silence. Diversity starts with the truth.
The event will take place in November 21st 2010 at Killeen Texas at the Killeen Conference Center.
Speakers will be Walid Shoebat, with decorated war hero General William Boykin, Kamal Saleem, and Robert Spencer.
For tickets got to FFMU.ORG or call at 877-832-7200

Obviously, the event is boilerplate Tea Party: using tragedy to promote fear and hate, and fear and hate to make reason look weak. I blogged on the line-up here; most of the speakers need no introduction. Shoebat is a pseudo-expert on terrorism, Islamic extremism, and Biblical prophecy, and he teaches that Obama is a secret Muslim and that the Bible has prophesised a Muslim anti-Christ. Boykin, like Shoebat, believes that the US is in a spiritual war against Islam with an apocalyptic dimension, and he was recently explaining how health care reform represents a “Marxist insurgency” and a Nazi-like conspiracy to “establish a constabulary force… that can control the population”. Robert Spencer, curiously, has not so far mentioned his participation on his own site; perhaps he’d rather keep his association with Christian fundamentalism low-key, given the Martin Mawyer fiasco. According to the FFMU website, the event will also include Lynn Woolley, a right-wing radio host from Dallas.

The line-up speaks for itself, and I can see why the Killeen Chamber of Commerce, which is supporting the official 5 November memorial, might want to make sure there is no confusion. Davies also tells us that

We are offering Killeen businesses the opportunity to participate as a sponsor, but no one is pressuring anyone as insinuated by the Chamber.

Without fuller information it’s impossible to know for sure what’s happened here.

The ICTOA, which is supporting the FFMU event, is the “International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association”; according to its blurb, it

was founded by members of the New York City Police Department. The ICTOA is comprised of law enforcement personnel, firefighters, military, first responders, private/corporate security, and other related professionals…

It bills itself as offering “Training, Education and Networking”, and it held a conference last month at which Shoebat was a speaker. According to a press release:

Ilana Freedman, one of this country’s pre-eminent private sector intelligence analysts, will join some of our nation’s leading experts at the 8th Annual International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association (ICTOA) Conference. The ICTOA Conference agenda will be packed with other specialists in the counter-terrorism field, including Steve Emerson, Walid Shoebat, Aaron Richman, and Ben Venzke. The prestigious panel of speakers will discuss the threat of terrorism in the United States today.

As Emerson in particular can tell you, the gravy train is quite lucrative.
